Alcoholism: A Disease of the Brain

"Alcoholism is a Disease of the Brain" is something everyone will agree to. But few of us would exactly be knowing why alcoholism is considered as a disease. Well, when we say that a person is suffering from alcoholism, we mean that he has an experience of uncontrollable craving for alcohols. As the result, alcohol becomes priority for the individual.

Usually this craving interferes with the individual functioning and performance. You might be thinking how… if you look at yourself, you will see that we completely rely on our brain to release dopamine to experience the feeling of contentment and to encourage our responses to the usual rewards of everyday life.

But when we start having alcohol, dopamine surges increases and as the result brain responds by decreasing the dopamine activity. In addition, their brain structure and brain function has become very dependent on them. After consuming too much alcohol everyday, the brain regions are affected and decision-making and judgement ability decreases. Complete brain functioning is influenced and slowly one looses control. Seeing the effects of alcoholism one can easily conclude that it is disease of the brain.
